Full Description
A public comprehensive university located in the Muntenia region, southern Romania, with multiple campuses, over 7,500 students, and 258 academic staff. The university specializes in education, business, science, ICT, engineering, and humanities and hosts an institute for scientific and multidisciplinary research.

The university is actively involved in research and innovation, particularly in energy and sustainability. It develops advanced Energy Management Systems (EMS) to support decarbonization and energy efficiency, aligning with EU strategies. Its digital Local Energy System enhances flexibility services and cross-sector integration, contributing to the European energy transition.

Additionally, research efforts focus on food quality monitoring and loss reduction through controlled atmosphere storage, ensuring better preservation of fresh fruits and vegetables. These initiatives support sustainability, human health, and economic efficiency across the entire supply chain.

With strong engagement in European projects, the university plays a vital role in advancing knowledge and innovation in key strategic areas.

Research and Innovation in Energy:
Within the university campus, the multi-vector Energy Management System (EMS) supports energy managers and decision-makers in achieving decarbonization goals and implementing energy efficiency strategies. By leveraging smart control algorithms, improvements have been observed in renewable energy self-consumption and cost reduction. The digital Local Energy System enhances flexibility services and cross-sector integration, aligning with the EU strategy on energy system integration.
Digitalization and smart grids facilitate cross-sectoral connections, supported by appropriate legal frameworks in line with the EC RePower initiative. Knowledge sharing among energy stakeholders across various sectors at the European level contributes to a smoother transition.

Research and Innovation in Bioeconomy:
Reducing food losses is an essential strategic objective at European level and has multiple significant social, environmental and economic effects. The storage duration of fresh fruits and/or vegetables, with preserving their sensory and nutritional properties suitable for consumption, varies depending on parameters such as temperature, humidity, the concentration of gases (i.e. oxygen, carbon dioxide, etc.) of the atmosphere in the storage facilities. Controlled atmosphere in the storage premises is one of the methods to improve the food preservation conditions, with direct positive effects on human health, environmental protection, and economy, for all participants involved in the chain of production-distribution-consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Research and Innovation in Signal Processing, Image Processing and Artificial Intelligence:
The loss of hearing seriously impacts the quality of life of human beings, and this is an increasing medical problem in Romania, the European Union, and worldwide. Current results obtained at Valahia University envisage hearing aid design advances, especially regarding howling, occlusion, and entrainment effects. Europe's increasing age problem implies further research motivation for developing new expertise in gait-related disorders, heart disease detection, diabetic foot ulcer detection, and sign language recognition. Other area of interest is image processing for automated pest and disease detection using computer vision for precision agriculture and smart farming. Furthermore, the research teams from Valahia University have expertise in image enhancement, and image watermarking. For example, the design of state-of-the-art reversible watermarking algorithms can be mentioned. Currently, reversible image enhancement algorithms that provide visual enhancement have been developed, ensuring the exact recovery of the original image from the enhanced version, without storing or transmitting any other data.
