General information
- Short Summary
- A French company designing and selling small size products based on vertical axis (with synchronized blades) wind turbines (VAWT) is looking for industrial partners in the maritime or renewable energy sectors to co-develop middle/large size offshore wind farms
- Full Description
-
The company has been designing, manufacturing and selling for 9 years innovative solutions to produce electricity from wind and solar energy. It started with the development of a product combining innovative small size vertical wind turbines with photovoltaic panels. This product is easily installed on flat roof buildings. Based on a disruptive technology the urban wind turbine features a vertical axis with synchronized blades. With this great expertise, the firm knows now how to apply its breakthrough technology to middle or large size vertical axis wind turbines which could be used for offshore wind farms.
So far, large scale offshore wind farms are using large horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) to maximize the energy extracted from a site. However, turbulent wakes created by the first row decrease the power output of the turbines behind by up to 40%. Vertical axis wind turbines could solve the problem since research has shown that this type of turbine exhibits the opposite behaviour when composed in wind farms because they enhance each other’s performance.
In a near future, the traditional horizontal axis propeller wind turbines could be replaced by vertical turbines more compact and efficient in offshore wind farms.
Therefore, this SME developing small size vertical axis wind turbine is looking for industrial partners in the maritime or renewable energy sectors to use the SME’s VAWT expertise and innovative technology to co- develop middle/large size Vertical Axis Wind turbines for offshore wind farms. - Advantages and Innovations
-
This VAWT solution has many benefits for offshore floating wind turbines:
- their centre of gravity is far lower than for HAWTs. This means that it is much easier and cheaper to make them float.
- they do not need wind with great wind direction stability ie they do not need to be so high to operate efficiently. For the same power it is easier and cheaper to have several “middle size wind turbines” than few “very big size wind turbines” (cost of floating structures much lower).
- the operation and maintenance of “smaller VAWTs” is easier and cheaper.
- The aerodynamic nature of this innovative technology has been confirmed numerous times in win tunnel tests and real-life conditions. - Technical Specification or Expertise Sought
-
Technical specification:
This VAWT technology allows high wind energy extraction performance; wind tunnel validations show that its technology captures between 28% and 31% of the kinetic energy of the wind.
Minimum drag maximum output. The angle of the blades changes as they rotate so that they are never pointing directly into a headwind but either downwind or at a slight angle. - Stage of Development
